What do you mean by "crashes"? Were there any error messages logged? In
doubt, run tinc in the foreground with debugging messages enabled:
tincd -n <netname> -d5 -D
> # cat /etc/issue
> Raspbian GNU/Linux 7 \n \l

You should be able to upgrade your Raspbian installation to jessie, then
you get the newer version of tinc as well.
